Juraj Sinay - Laureate of the Lifetime Achievement Award in the field of S&T
The 2025 Science and Technology Award in the category Lifetime Achievement was awarded to Dr. h. c. mult. prof. Ing. Juraj Sinay, DrSc. He received the award for his lifelong research activities in the field of applying risk management to machines and mechanical equipment as part of sustainable and competitive design and engineering activities.
Professor Juraj Sinay is one of the pioneers in the field of technical system safety in Slovakia and Europe. He began his scientific career in the 1970s with research on crane safety. He is the founder of the so-called Košice School of Risk, which made Slovakia well known within the international professional community. He significantly contributed to the development of the field of technical system safety, supervised 19 PhD students (including one foreign student), and led several habilitation and professorship procedures. He is the author and co-author of several monographs in Slovakia and abroad, chapters in international books, articles in indexed journals, and holds several patents. For his scientific work, he received honorary Doctor honoris causa titles from universities in Miskolc, Wuppertal, Uzhhorod, and Ostrava. He has been active in international professional organizations, for example as vice-president of the Gesellschaft für Sicherheitswissenschaften. He has led multiple national and international APVV, VEGA, and KEGA projects. In recent years, he has focused on the use of hydrogen technologies and, as a coordinator or advisor to ministers and state secretaries at the Ministry of Economy of the Slovak Republic, contributed to the development of the Slovak National Hydrogen Strategy and its action plan. He was the initiator of the establishment of the Hydrogen Technology Research Center in Košice. His lifelong work represents a significant contribution to the field of technical system safety and the development of hydrogen technologies, which is further confirmed by the awarding of the Prof. Dr. Peter C. Compes Medal for lifelong contribution to safety sciences. As a teacher, scientist, and visionary, he consistently emphasized that technology should serve people, not control them.
Professor Juraj Sinay served as Rector of the Technical University of Košice from 2000 to 2007, and later also held the position of Vice-Rector. Within the Slovak Rectors’ Conference, he served as Vice-President and from 2002 to 2005 as President. Juraj Sinay initiated and led the institutional evaluation project of higher education institutions, which the SRC carried out during his mandate with the support of the European University Association and the Government of the Slovak Republic.
