Scientific research/artistic projects
Comenius University Bratislava (CU) has achieved significant success in the area of scientific research and projects. In 2023, Michal Májek, a researcher at the Faculty of Natural Sciences of CU, was awarded a prestigious European Research Council (ERC) grant worth EUR 1.55 million for the CAPELE project, which focuses on chemical catalysis using piezoelectric materials. Comenius University received a grant of EUR 700,000 from the Horizon Europe scheme in 2023 for the BEATsep project. Its team at the Faculty of Medicine is studying changes in the blood microenvironment and the molecular mechanisms of immune and neurological disorders caused by sepsis. In 2024, the CU Science Park succeeded in the twinning scheme of the Horizon Europe programme with the FORGENOM II project, which aims to enhance scientific excellence in the field of biomedical genomics and proteomics.
Comenius University Bratislava’s strong position in Slovak science was also confirmed by the results of
VER (Verification of Excellence in Research) from 2023. A quarter of all Slovak scientific output published globally was produced by CU researchers. This trend is further confirmed by the new automatic and continuous system for rewarding outstanding scientific performance and innovation, introduced by the Ministry of Education, Research, Development and Youth of the Slovak Republic. The first round of this new subsidy was distributed in early 2025, and Comenius University received 54.10 % of the total amount.
International relations
Comenius University Bratislava (CU), as Slovakia’s foremost educational and scientific research institution, actively fosters both bilateral and multilateral international relationships, supports student and staff mobilities, as well as undertakes development projects aimed at enhancing internationalisation. In that regard, in 2024, through its International Relations Section, the University secured a project under the Recovery and Resilience Plan, titled “Audit of the Level of Internationalisation and Implementation of Internationalisation Projects of Higher Education Institutions and Research Institutions.” Additionally, the External Relations Office, in collaboration with the International Relations Office, obtained a project from the same Plan under the call for “Support for the Promotion of Higher Education Institutions Abroad.” Furthermore, the International Relations Office continued to address the needs of Ukrainian students and, in December 2024, established a partnership with the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) to facilitate focus group discussions across all faculties. Comenius University also enhances its international profile through active membership in various associations, most notably UNICA (the Network of Universities from the Capitals of Europe), where it stands
as the sole Slovak institution represented.
CU is member of European University alliance of ten comprehensive, research-intensive universities from ten European countries – European university Network to promote equitable quality of Life, sustaInability and Global engagement through Higher education Transformation (ENLIGHT, https://enlight-eu.org/).
