Short description

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava (AFAD) does not have faculties, but departments (see: https://www.vsvu.sk/en/departments/). Departments typically correspond to study programs in field of study “Arts” at the Bachelor´s level. Alphabetical list of AFAD departments: Applied Arts; Architecture; Conservation and Restoration; Design; Intermedia; Painting; Platform for Digital Arts; Photography and New Media; Printmaking and Other Media; Sculpture, Object, Installation; Textiles; Visual Communication. Department Theory and History of Art runs Master´s and PhD´s study programs in the field of study “Art and Culture Sciences”. Division of Drawing is a department, which does not run a study program per se, but delivers training in drawing to students of other study programs in field of study “Arts”.

Scientific research/artistic, projects

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava (AFAD) has a Research center, which coordinates research activities and publishing activities. A couple of publications are publisher by AFAD each year (see: https://www.vsvu.sk/en/research-and-grants/research-and-art/publishing-activity/). AFAD organizes conferences, related to its research interests, be it long term: Art Research in Discussion (May 2024); Contemporary thinking about exhibitions and curating (Nov. 2023); Gender perspectives in the artistic space of Central Europe (Dec. 2024) or reflecting current events: War Experiences in Ukrainian Art (Oct. 2023). Notable artistic activities are carried out with our international partners: Arts and Crafts today (Oct. 2023) workshops and exhibition featured partners from ELIA network from as far as Canada, Studia Space participated in Winter School of GSA (Apr. 2024). Office of project activities coordinates KEGA, VEGA, Development and other projects.

International relations

The Academy of Fine Arts and Design Bratislava (AFAD) main strategic goal in the field of internationalisation and foreign policy is building high-quality and strategic partnerships. AFAD built key partnership, crucial for coordination and exchange, in Europe through KA103. AALTO, ESADSE, GSA, KONSTFACK are amongst its partners. In regions of Eastern Europe, Balkan and

Caucasus AFAD built relations with partners with future potential. Finally, AFAD extended its reach via KA107 to non- European countries, including Asia, the Americas, and Turkey. AFAD is an active member of the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA; https://elia-artschools.org/) and in 2022 hosted “ELIA PIE” conference in Bratislava. International Office of AFAD manages cca 50 outgoing and 50 incoming academic mobilities per academic year, similar number of foreign internships, and several exchanges of pedagogues and staff, besides international cooperations and events.
