Short description

The Armed Forces Academy of General M. R. Štefánik (AFA) is a state military university located in Liptovský Mikuláš. It provides education for future officers and professional soldiers of the Armed Forces of the Slovak Republic at Bachelor and Master/Diploma Engineering level (Slovak nationality is a requirement for studies) and Doctoral level. AFA offers higher education at all three levels in accredited study programs: Security and Defence of the State; Electronic Weapon Systems; Military Communication and Information Systems; Weapon Systems, Weapons, and their Parts. Its structure consists of departments and specialized units that adapt to the current needs of practice and the armed forces.

Scientific research/artistic projects

The relationship between education, science and creative activities at the Armed Forces Academy of General M. R. Štefánik (AFA) is based on the introduction of the results of science and creative activities into education, training and practice. Indicators of the link between education and the creative activities of AFA´s teachers are research and development projects in national and international context, patents, editorial and publishing activities, student scientific and professional activities, international cooperation and quality infrastructure. The priority directions of science at AFA are: National and International Crisis Management; Security and National Defence; Development of weapons and weapon systems, optimization of their use and maintenance; Military Communications and Information Systems; Cyber Defence and Security; Electronic Systems. Supported research areas are: Counter-terrorism; Electromagnetic security; Effective command and control systems; Technologies and materials for defence modernisation; Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) and their use for the benefit of the Slovak Armed Forces; Modelling and simulation technologies in the field of education and training of the Slovak Armed Forces; Social sciences.

International relations

In the field of foreign activities, the Armed Forces Academy of General M. R. Štefánik (AFA) focuses on the development and deepening of cooperation with

foreign partner military educational institutions of V4, EU, NATO and NATO partner countries, within the framework of which it participates in conferences, seminars and military educational and training/sports activities. AFA´s teachers and students actively participate in scientific professional conferences, symposia and seminars where they present the results of their work in science and research. AFA is involved in solving scientific and professional problems in NATO STO panels as well as in international projects within the Erasmus+ programme. AFA also provides career education, which includes international courses (ISOC – International Staff Officers’ Course, IPJO – Introduction to the Planning of Joint Operations, TPLF – Tactical Planning for Land Forces, COPC – Comprehensive Operations Planning Course, DMPTL – Introduction to the Decision-Making Process at the Tactical Level).
