Short description

The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice (UVLF) is the only veterinary university and one of two higher education institutions for pharmacy education in Slovakia. The university is offering the first and second joined degree study programmes in General Veterinary Medicine (also in English), Food Hygiene and Pharmacy. Other accredited study programmes are the bachelor´s programmes Cynology, Man-Animal Relationship and its Use in Canistherapy and Hippotherapy, Veterinary Nursing, Safety of Food and Feed, and the master´s programmes Market and Food Quality, and Animal Welfare and Protection. The accredited PhD. programmes are offered in the fields of veterinary sciences and biology. UVLF offers its students a high level of practical preparation, permanent diagnostic and medical contact with animals.

Scientific research/artistic projects

The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy in Košice (UVLF) research activities follow the scientific concept of ONE WORLD – ONE HEALTH, which links veterinary and human medicine, food hygiene, the environment and pharmacy in three areas of research – veterinary medicine, life sciences, and medical and pharmaceutical sciences. The cutting-edge high impact research with the greatest potential for interdisciplinary links is focused on regenerative medicine, healthy functional foods and probiotics, infectious diseases, zoonoses, and pharmacy. UVLF has significant cooperation in these research areas with universities in Košice, several institutes of the Slovak Academy of Sciences and the city’s top medical institutions, as well as cooperation, exchange of knowledge and practical training in beekeeping with 18 members from foreign research organisations, universities, NGOs and national and international beekeepers’ representatives within the project B-THENET (Horizon Europe). UVLF is a partner in the MediPark Košice project, where it conducts applied research in zoonoses and major infectious diseases. UVLF also hosts the Laboratory of Biomedical Microbiology and Immunology with a state-of-the-art BSL-3 Laboratory and the National Reference Laboratory for Pesticides.

International relations

The University of Veterinary Medicine and Pharmacy

in Košice (UVLF) has been offering veterinary medicine studies in English since 1991 and currently more than a quarter of its students are from abroad. Since 2010, the university and the Norwegian NORD University in Bodø have been running a unique joint bachelor study programme Animal Science, which is taught in English. UVLF develops international cooperation with educational and scientific institutions in the field of veterinary medicine and pharmacy. UVLF is a member of the World Veterinary Association (WVA), the Association of American Veterinary Medical Colleges (AAVMC), the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), it is a signatory of the Magna Charta Universitatum and others. UVLF is an active member of the European Association of Establishments for Veterinary Education (EAEVE), the European University Association (EUA), the European Association of Faculties of Pharmacy (EAFP), the Federation of Veterinarians of Europe (FVE), the Veterinary Network of Students Staff Transfer (VetNEST) etc. UVLF develops international cooperation on the basis of bilateral and multilateral agreements and memoranda of cooperation.
